Earlier this week we were hanging out in the laundy room where I shared the vision board and plans for updating that space. The laundry room is a small room that is right off the entrance to the house from the garage. So, it is a high traffic area that needs to serve a lot of different functions.

As a refresher, here is my vision for updating this space.

Guess what? We’ve done some of the work! We still have a number of things to do, but it is looking WAY better! Come on in…

The view that once looked like this…

Now looks like this!

As you can see, it’s not quite done, but huge progress right? Okay, so what’s different?

First, we painted the walls using the same CIL “Toasted White” paint shade that was used to refresh our powder room and kitchen/family room. Then, we had the upper cabinets built to the ceiling and trimmed out and we updated the knobs as well. We also had our electical moved down so that it now sits below our new counter that spans the whole top of the washer and dryer. We had a wooden shelf installed too. Oh, and we removed the ugly utility sink!

The cabinets that were once insubstantial now have some serious presence! Building them up to the ceiling and adding moulding to the top now not only offer us more storage, but offers some serious style as well. MEOW. She’s a looker.

We updated the cabinet hardware with these simple black knobs from Home Depot. They are called “Richelieu Notre-Dame Collection Matte Black Traditional Cabinet Knob” (how’s that for a short name).

Our new counter top is a nice addition as well. We went with a laminate for cost and durability and chose a colour called “Mont Blanc” from Arborite. As you can see, it’s a faux marble look.

Overall, I am really happy with it. However, I am disappointed that it wasn’t as deep as I wanted it. I had hoped that it would extend out a lot farther on the top of the washer and dryer but didn’t realize the miscommunication until after it was installed. By then, it was too late to fix. Live and learn.

We had a wooden shelf installed as well, which will be great for adding little baskets to coral things such as loose buttons, change and keys. The little wooden support stick in the far right of the photo under the shelf is NOT going to stay there. It’s just a placeholder as the shelf dried, awaiting the wall behind it to be tiled.

The shelf is nice and chunky and has a good vibe to it. I like how it adds a natural touch to the space. I’ll play off the warm tone of the wood when I bring in some art and baskets so that the laundry room doesn’t end up feeling too cold or sterile which can happen when you are using primarily white and grey.

In the photo above you can see where the old electrical box used to be. The new electrical outlet is now down below the counter top. Moving it allowed us to have a nice clean wall-to-wall counter top without any holes for cords!

And, you can see a sample of the tile we are going to go with for the back wall. Yes!

On the other side of the (tiny) room, what used to look like this…

Now looks like this…

Ikea_Nissedal_mirror

We added the Nissedal mirror from Ikea here. The mirror seen in the ‘before’ photos on the back of the door above, broke, so a new one for the wall was in order. Since this is the room we leave the house through, it’s great having a mirror in here to give yourself a once-over as you leave. The door in the photo above (left) goes to the garage, and the opening on the right. leads to the hallway.

We also updated the hardware on the two doors. Going into the garage we swapped out an old ugly brass knob for a cleaner black version.

And on the interior door, we replaced another old brass knob for a sleek new lever. We actually have replaced all of our interior hardware with these and love them. The knob is the “Trapani” from Weiser and the colour is Venetian Bronze.

We also updated the floor register cover too as the old one was a discoloured white plastic one.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering about where some of the clutter went that are now missing from the laundry room as we aim toward the finish line, the vacuum got mounted just outside the door to the garage on the garage wall (so it’s still really easy to grab), Chace’s hats got moved to a basket in the garage as did Belle’s leash and accessories. So, they are still accessible as we come and go, but not all jammed into this little room.

So, what is left to do? We are still missing the bottom cupboard door, have yet to install a sink and new faucet and have plans to tile the wall behind the washer and dryer up to the ceiling (around the cabinets and window). Oh, and I’d like to add some art too! Plus, I’ll need some baskets for that new shelf so I can organize and make everything look pretty. If you missed it and would like to read about all of the plans, check out this post for the mood board that has itemized details about each thing we want to change.

BUT, she’s come along way right? It is now so much nicer to come home to this space versus what it was before. The end is in sight!

Let’s stay connected!
