Our house was built in 1997 and as such, we have a lot of ‘special’ treats gifted to us by this genre. Case and point, our two-storey entrance chandelier. It was original to when the house was built and appeared to be straight from the set of Dynasty (even though that was the 80’s). Regardless, it just had to go!

But wait – it gets better. Look how she sparkled when lit…

She fancy.

So, fancy or not, she had to go. Our entrance is nice and spacious, being that it is two storeys so we needed something substantial in size, but ideally not in visual weight. I didn’t want anything that felt too heavy. In addition to that, it had to be a light that could be mounted on a sloped ceiling.

After a bunch of research, I chose Odie. That’s seriously his name. For real. This chandelier is called the “Odie 8 – Light Lantern Square / Rectangle Chandelier“, and I purchased it from Wayfair.

Here he is, looking handsome and dapper in his new home.

One of my favourite design features of this chandelier is the fact that the “drop” is a sleek, simple post versus the linked chain that you see in so many chandeliers. The post is made up of 12″ segments that you screw together, allowing you to control how high or low the chandelier hangs.

But, how high do I hang my chandelier in a two-storey entrance? Glad you asked. The general rule of thumb is that the bottom of the chandelier should be in line with the second storey. So, in a house with a standard 8′ ceiling, the bottom of your chandelier will be about 8′ from the ground. I know it appears higher in the photo below, but that is just the perspective of the shot.

Odie (does anyone else think of Garfield when reading that) doesn’t come with bulbs so I chose a dimmable, LED, candelabra style bulb that I ordered from Amazon. They work great – are bright and energy efficient. Plus, the fact that they are dimmable = winner in my eyes.

I’m pleased to report that Odie has found his ‘forever home’ and we tell him daily that he’s a good boy.

Finding a chandelier that is hefty enough for a two-storey entrance can be a tricky process. Later this week I’ll share some inspiration photos and a round up of large scale chandeliers suitable for such a space!
