One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to add a little style update to your bathroom is to replace the showerhead. Well, bet you can’t guess what I did recently? I know it’s a pretty big mystery at this point of the post…
That’s right, I replaced our old showerhead with a “new” one (what gave it away?). You’ll notice “new” is in quotes because although new to this shower, the showerhead itself is not. We had this showerhead in our master bathroom shower but since that shower is really small, having a showerhead with removable sprayer didn’t really make sence – especially if you are 6’5″ tall and knock the sprayer out every time you turn around (cough, cough, Kevin). So, we bought a new showerhead for that shower and I recently replaced our old one in the spare bathroom with this “new” one.
Replacing a showerhead is really simple process. Want to know how it’s done? Here’s a handy step-by-step guide if you’d like to try it a home.
Step one: remove the old showerhead.
To do this, I used vise grip pliers to loosen the old showerhead (it will probably be really stiff) and then unscrewed it manually once it was loose.
Step two: remove: remove the old plumbers tape.
I used a knife and wire bristled brush to pick and scrape away the old tape. It sounds tedious but didn’t take too long!
Step three: clean the bare showerhead pipe. I just used some good ‘ol soap and water for this.
Step four: wrap new plumbers tape (we used this one here) on the pipe. Maintain tension on the tape so that it wraps snugly around the pipe. Wrap around a few times and break the tape from the roll by pulling sharply – it breaks easily. Smooth the loose end down over the threads.
step five: screw on your new showerhead. Turn on the water and check for leaks!
Step six: tighten if needed. Mine was leaking a bit so I tightened further with the pliers. I used a bit of masking tape to protect the plastic when tightening.
Test for leaks again and you are done!
A quick and simple update!
