Child’s play

November 25, 2011 by Elaine No Comments

There is an office building near where I live that has this painting behind the reception desk. I’ve admired it for years and this week while in the office I was ‘that person’ who actually pulled my phone out and snapped a picture of it. Should have seen the look I got from the receptionist…

Our little guy is just over two and a half and in the new year we’ll be working on transitioning him to his ‘big boy bed’ and I’d like to do some inexpensive updates to his room, taking it from nursery to well… three-year-old-ville. I was thinking I could recreate something like this!

Anyhoo, weird looks aside check this out. I LOVE this.

Wouldn’t that be fun in a kids room? I especially love the texture and the layering of paint. Here’s a closer look (again with the weird raised eyebrow as I zoomed in with my cell phone – not making too many friends at the office).

I thought this could be relatively easy to recreate and the randomness is super cool in my opinion. It will also be a fun way to get a toddler familiar with letter shapes – and seeing them interplay with each other in a new and unexpected way. Recreating it myself will allow me to customize the colour palette to suit his room too!

And speaking of that, check out what someone’s big boy bedding is going to look like when he gets his new twin bed. LOVE!

Dwell Studio

How adorable is this!? I adore the owls all the quirkiness they offer. I am also googoogaga for the graphic and fun pattern. So sweet. And so many fun options to play off of this!

Here are two other bedding designs that I was contemplating for awhile but the owls just won me over… I think, no, I’m sure… I think. Oh, they are just ALL so cute!

Awesome sauce.

So yes, Owls and some funky letters are the start of my daydreaming about how to put together an extra special sweet and adorable room… for a little boy who is extra sweet and extra special… and adorable.

I will share any painting DIY as I tackle it And if the owls ever make an appearance on this end you will be the first hoooo to hear!

How about you, DIY’d any art lately? Purchased any new bedding recently? Was it owl based? What do you think of my lofty vision?

I got PINNED!

September 19, 2011 by admin No Comments

Being a new blogger it doesn’t take much to excite me – a nice comment on a post, a new follower, I’m happy. It means that people are liking what they see and for a visual gal like me that’s my idea of a good time. And if someone is taking a moment out of their busy day to read what I have to say, then even better. AND if I can make someone chuckle… well then I’m golden (well not officially but it’s a saying people).

That being said, imagine my surprise when this picture from my recent mantel makeover was pinned on pinterest! Happy Dance! I feel quite honoured 🙂

Now, for those of you scratching your head saying “what is Pinterest?” let me enlighten you!

Pinterest is a website that is basically an online file of whatever catches your eye that you’d like to remember for later – use it for inspiration, reference of simply to jog your memory about something you saw. Put your hand up if you have/had a file on your computer full of pics called ‘cool stuff’… or a gazillion unorganized bookmarks of things you wanted to save for later.

No more.

Pinterest is is SO cool and slightly (used loosely) addictive. I love how you can add comments about what you see and want to remember (i.e. “great idea for a dinner party”). The other great thing is that the website saves the site that you originally saw your idea from (great if there are instructions or something you’d like to do at a later date – DIY instructions or a recipe for example). You can also ‘follow’ others who have great taste and see what things caught their eye (chances are you’d like them too)!

The definition on the Pinterest home page says it best:

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.
How I explain it further is that basically you are ‘pinning’ something of ‘interest’ – Pinterest. Here is an example of a ‘pinboard’. This one is home decor projects but you can have as many as you want in any amount of categories. You make it how you wish!

So thank you to the person that thought my little mantel redo interesting enough to pin and save for later reference. I’m glad I inspired you 🙂

Blogland Beauts #3: Subway Art, Blue Pumpkins and… oil!?

September 16, 2011 by admin No Comments

There is so much great inspiration out there in Blogland and this week was no exception. Here are some great finds from the past little bit…

First we have this awesome, fantastic, super cool graphic subway art (that I am SO going to frame) brought to us by Eighteen25. Jamie, Jodi and Jennifer are three sisters that have a fantastic and fun little blog. Always inspiring and beautiful to look at it’s a ‘must read’ on my list. Love it. Thanks ladies!

AND, if orange and black aren’t your thing, they also have this awesome design in green, purple and (just) black as well. Enjoy!

Since we’re on the topic of Hallowe’en check out these awesome blue pumpkins made by Beth over at Home Stories A 2 Z. Simple and easy to make you simply need some dollar store pumpkins, some spray paint and crackle paint medium. Another thing on my list that I must try! I love how she took the typical Hallowe’en ‘icon’ and switched up the colour palette. The possibilities are endless. Beth’s blog is full of great ‘decorating on a dime’ ideas (her words not mine) but if you ask me her ideas always look like a million bucks!

—–
And to switch it up completely we head over to Delighted Momma where this week Lindsay offers yet another great skin tip (she is a licensed esthetician) to try. Delighted Momma is full of wonderful skincare and health advice and I find it very inspiring. This latest trick is bound to peek your curiousity…. Wash your face with OIL. Seriously. It makes sense. Go and check it out … I’m going to give it a try!

Thanks ladies for the continued inspiration and great ideas. Love your blogs. And to my readers, hope you do too 🙂

Blogland Beauts #2 – books, cupcakes and bubbles!

September 2, 2011 by admin No Comments

First up are these amazing little front facing book shelves (made from Ikea Spice Racks!) created by Lindsay over at Aubrey & Lindsay’s Little House Blog. Lindsay is a stationery designer (like me – well, not exclusively. I’m  a Graphic Designer but have done my own fair share of wedding stationery designs!), a mom (like me) and a blogger (like me) – cool chick! I guess I will have to be (like her) and make some of these adorable little bookshelves for my son Chace. Love these!

– – – – –

Next up we visit Ashli over at Maillardville Manor. Ashli has a wonderful clean, organized, simple – yet beautiful – approach to her home and I’m a big fan of her blog. This week she featured this amazing cupcake stand made out of second hand dishware. How genius is this!?

Love that mini bunting. too cute!

And last but certainly not least we pop on over to visit Katie at Bower Power. Katie’s blog is one of my absolute all time faves! Katie is an amazing photographer and blogger. And she is just as talented on the keyboard (I mean computer not sythesizer but maybe she does that too?) as she is behind the camera. Her posts have been known to have me snorting coffee out my nose (seriously – girl is crazy HILARIOUS) or at times, even choke me up. She has an amazing way of expressing herself – as a wife and mom to a little boy – that is so real. This particular post about ‘bubbles‘ I found especially poignant. And it reminded me of the recent fun with bubbles that I had with my own little nugget (bottom pic).

Enjoy!

Lightening up and a shout out to Craig

August 31, 2011 by admin No Comments

Hello!

Long time no blog! Let me explain – A wild pack of Alpacas came out of nowher… er, ah the dog ate my homewor… Okay seriously, I’ve been ridiculously busy. Enough said. Blogging is very fun but unfortunately the first to go when my days get too full. That being said, I’m glad to be taking a moment to write and do enjoy it! Thanks for checking back in!

In our spare moments around here we’ve been doing some upgrades to our seen-better-days-family-room-furniture and have brightened up our main floor with some much overdue paint! Ah, feels so much fresher in here! And in the process has provided some fun projects and of course spawned a few new ones that I can’t wait to do… and blog about!

Plus, Chef Kev will be back with some new creations too 😉

Okay, so first off I paid a few visits to my friend (you may know him) Craig Slist. If you don’t, check him out, he’s got a great website. Via our friend Craig we got a new (to us) love seat, coffee table and leather club chair! I’ve got some big plans for the coffee table and folding side table you see beside Mr. Leatherson. Fun. Fun.

Exit old upholstered chair “redecorated” by cats and dog. Hello new club chair. Have a seat? Don’t mind if I do…

Good bye old hand-me-down coffee table. Hello new coffee table with storage that will make a repeat appearance on this blog in the near future… So nice to welcome you to our home…
And last but certainly not least we said ‘See ya’ to the avacodo green matte and glossy vertical stripes done by a previous owner and said ‘oh yeah we did’ to some new, light, creamy, airy paint. We also have some big plans for these rooms – hint: panelling, black accents… all to come later. She’s coming together and looking very nice!
So that is what we’ve been up to. It’s been busy around here yet we’ve had time for some upgrades. More to come but wanted to pop in and say ‘hi’!

Blogland Beauts: the premiere!

July 21, 2011 by admin No Comments

Since I’m a new blogger most of my readers so far have been friends and family (understandably). That being said, a lot of you might not be privy to the visual smorgasbord that is blogland. So, as a treat I decided to start a new feature that I plan to do once a week highlighting some great blogs, ideas, photos and writers that are out there. Each thing I feature will be something that has caught my eye over the last week.

Enjoy!

– – – – – – – –

First up is some wonderful Rosemary Lemonade posted by Krista over at Blue Eyed Yonder. Doesn’t this just look SO delicious! Yum yum yum – and these photos, gorgeous. Is she talented or what!? And her blog is so sweet. This recipe is listed on her site – must try soon!

– – – – –

Now that we are all nice and thirsty, let’s head to the water. Rachel and Lily are friends, wives, mothers and vintage junkies extraordinaire! They have a wonderful blog, Birch and Bird and Lily recently posted a bunch of AMAZING waterfront wedding destination photos. Here is a sneak peak, but you will have to head over to check out the whole collection. Stunning.

I love that chandelier and those lucite chairs against that mountain backdrop… sigh….

– – – – –

And last but certainly not least is a recent post by Coutney over at A Thoughtful Place. Her bio reads that she is “enamored with all things pretty, organized, well-designed, and efficient”. A kindred spirit! She featured these amazing designs by Pretty Smitten and… well I am! By both these amazing iPhone covers and Courtney’s wonderful blog.

So there you have the first in my Blogland Beauts series. What do you think? Feeling inspired? I know I am!
