Feature feature pumpkin eater

November 27, 2011 by Elaine No Comments

My spice rack update was featured today over on “Serenity Now” (thanks Amanda) in her “Weekend Bloggy Reading” link-up party (where bloggers can share links of what they were up to in the past week). Amanda thought my little rack was special and featured it here! What an honour!

Amanda is a mommy and blogger from Virgina and her site is great – check it out. I love her tagline… “A mommy’s guide to staying sane”.

She does some amazing crafts and her blog is a wonderful source of inspiration. Thanks again Amanda!

Happy weekend everyone!

Child’s play

November 25, 2011 by Elaine No Comments

There is an office building near where I live that has this painting behind the reception desk. I’ve admired it for years and this week while in the office I was ‘that person’ who actually pulled my phone out and snapped a picture of it. Should have seen the look I got from the receptionist…

Our little guy is just over two and a half and in the new year we’ll be working on transitioning him to his ‘big boy bed’ and I’d like to do some inexpensive updates to his room, taking it from nursery to well… three-year-old-ville. I was thinking I could recreate something like this!

Anyhoo, weird looks aside check this out. I LOVE this.

Wouldn’t that be fun in a kids room? I especially love the texture and the layering of paint. Here’s a closer look (again with the weird raised eyebrow as I zoomed in with my cell phone – not making too many friends at the office).

I thought this could be relatively easy to recreate and the randomness is super cool in my opinion. It will also be a fun way to get a toddler familiar with letter shapes – and seeing them interplay with each other in a new and unexpected way. Recreating it myself will allow me to customize the colour palette to suit his room too!

And speaking of that, check out what someone’s big boy bedding is going to look like when he gets his new twin bed. LOVE!

How adorable is this!? I adore the owls all the quirkiness they offer. I am also googoogaga for the graphic and fun pattern. So sweet. And so many fun options to play off of this!

Here are two other bedding designs that I was contemplating for awhile but the owls just won me over… I think, no, I’m sure… I think. Oh, they are just ALL so cute!

Awesome sauce.

So yes, Owls and some funky letters are the start of my daydreaming about how to put together an extra special sweet and adorable room… for a little boy who is extra sweet and extra special… and adorable.

I will share any painting DIY as I tackle it And if the owls ever make an appearance on this end you will be the first hoooo to hear!

How about you, DIY’d any art lately? Purchased any new bedding recently? Was it owl based? What do you think of my lofty vision?

Spicin’ it up

November 24, 2011 by Elaine No Comments

Things are getting spicy over here! Okay, not really but this old spice rack got an update. Not too bad in her ‘day’, but looking a tad wimpy by today’s standards. Who am I kidding, it’s just a spice rack. Standards = none.

Behold, le spice rack before…
Pretty nice random bottles don’t you think?  No, me neither. Funny thing is that we had all the bottles that matched but for some reason I started putting them aside to clean and freshen up the contents and the rack sort of morphed into this er… ah, ‘eclectic’ collection.
Exhit A (well, I guess really it’s exhibit B) … old, peeling dirty labels. I mean, not to judge but… eeewh.
A good cleaning of the rack and a few coats of good ol’ Oil Rubbed Bronze and we were on our way!
The labels got some major lovin’ too as well as all the jars getting a thourough clean and top up.
This was a super fast makeover and I think it makes a BIG impression. It’s like a whole new spice rack! How did it look in the end? Well, just check out my rack. (yup, was totally waiting to say that).
Before:
After!
Admit it. I have a nice rack.
Here is a closer look at the finish. I love how ‘oil rubbed bronze’ has that shimmery undertone. Fancy Shmancy.
I have a fancy shmancy rack.
Have you oil rubbed anything lately? Spiced anything up? Made a bad joke about how fancy your rack is? Please tell me I’m not the only one ;).

Serenity Now

June 23, 2011 by Elaine No Comments

Okay, so further to my post yesterday of our master bedroom smoothing, here is the follow up focusing on our master bathroom en-suite.

STOP! No seriously, that was what would happen when I walked in there. You see the walls were kind of red (painted that way when we moved in). So I would stop… and wait. Wait until they turned green so I could continue on with my duties.

The red had to go. It would be okay in a parisian apartment or a fancy boudoir but not with our seaside-ish bedding and calm bedroom walls. Non rouge-pas.

So, I pulled a calming blue shade out of our bedding (no, not the old blue on the bedroom walls) and introduced it to it’s friend – white paneling – which I also freshened up with new paint. Then I threw on some earrings (on it, not me) in the way of signs and hooks and off he she went (what, girls can wear blue) to the party.

I picked up those little ‘his and her’ hooks when we visited England back in 2008. Love those.
And the best part about all this (aside from the obvious lack of red) is that I did all of this when my hubby was away one weekend for soccer. And yes, unlike the odd haircut or nail polish change, he did notice. And he liked what he saw.
So, my applogies to red, I don’t hate you but don’t want to date you anymore. I’m much happier with blue thank you very much. Ah…. serenity now.
